Locally Used Cars

Locally used cars are cars which were purchased and registered locally.

Reconditioned from Overseas (Mainly UK and Japan)

These cars have been used overseas mainly in the countries mentioned above and brought into Malaysia several years after being used. In some markets, these cars are known as gray imports.

The term recondition mean that these cars have undergone some sort of refurbishment. These cars can be considered as good as new as many of them can easily be passed out as a new car without looking at the mileage of course.

Important thing to note here when purchasing a recondition car is to confirm that the mileage has not been tampered with. This can be done by having a close inspection around the meter gauges and look for signs that it has been tampered with.
This can be dangerous for the buyer because the buyer might unknowingly think the car is good because of its low miles when in actual fact the real mileage is a lot higher and the car probably needs a major service.

Another area to check is documentation. Cars that are brought into Malaysia needs to have a valid Approved Permit (AP). Ensure the car has a valid AP and ensure that the details specified on the AP matches that one physically on the car such as engine, chassis no, etc. Cars caught without valid AP’s can and may be confiscated by the relevant authorities.

Deciding between UK and Japan

Specification wise between the 2 countries, UK cars have better specification compared to the Japanese ones. However, condition wise in general the Japan cars are usually better and tend to have lower mileage compared to UK cars.

The only downside to Japan cars is that everything is in Japanese and can be quite patient testing if you are trying to navigate your way through the onboard computer or satellite navigation (if the vehicle is equipped with one).

The key is to get the car from a reputable dealer that you know you can trust. With so many dealers available, work with those you feel comfortable with.
